One of customs in a New Year – Mochi

Do you know mochi? I believe it’s called “rice cake” in English. Eating mochi is one of customs in the New Year.

Mochi is made from rice. But the rice is different from sushi rice. The rice for mochi is sweater and gets stickier and elasticity when it’s steamed and pounded many times.

How we eat mochi is that we bake mochi and dip it into soy sauce and wrap with nori (sea weed), dust mochi with a mixture of soy bean flour and sugar, and so on. People make soup (usually soy sauce taste with lots of vegetables) and put mochi into it.

People can’t have a New Year without mochi in Japan.
